1964 NY Worlds Fair

The 1964 Words Fair was held in Flushing Meadows, just outside of Queens. Peace through Understanding was the theme and the future was the style. If you go to Flushing Meadows today you will find a few remnants of the park. The Unisphere, the beautiful centerpiece is well maintained, although the fountain around it does not run anymore. It is enormous, much larger than I expected... The Phillip Johnson designed Pavillion and Observation Towers are nearby, deteriorating, a great piece of 60s space age architecture quickly declining. A jet sculpture is nearby, rusting and falling apart in fast decline.

Flushing Meadows is a close train ride available from anywhere in New York City. This trip will only take a few hours and seeing the one square mile park is worth the short walk from the train station.
