Mount Airy NC is the real Mayberry. This is where Andy Griffith grew up and where he experienced the jail that would be made famous and the world would learn the southern way of easy small town living.
If you go to Mount Airy you will find yourself immersed in Mayberry. Barney's police car is there. Wally's Gas Station is on the edge of town, and the Blue bird diner is right in the middle of downtown. You will even find a great Andy Griffith display at the museum.
If you visit the jail you can step into an old cell, put on Andy's hat and coat, and take your picture. You too can be Andy or Barney.
Mount Airy is a fun stop along I-77. An escape for the day to a place that never existed, but sure was enjoyable.
