Touchdown Jesus Burns
Tragedy Occurs for Roadside Oddity Lovers !!Touchdown Jesus, the subject of an earlier blog entry, burned to the ground when lighting struck it. Located between Dayton and Cincinnati the Giant Jesus was a landmark and center of activity for the Solid Rock Church of Monroe OH.
As you might expect, the fire that burned the 60 foot statue caused some speculation by church members as to the meaning of the event.
"God struck God, I like the irony. Jesus struck Jesus,” said Dawn Smith, 25, of Hamilton, who was among those standing outside the vehicles along Union Road. “I had to see it. What else are you going to do on a Monday night?” Another member of the church was quoted in the Dayton Daily News “It sent goosebumps through my whole body because I am a believer,” said Levi Walsh, 29. “Of all the things that could have been struck, I just think that that would be protected. ... It’s something that’s not supposed to happen, Jesus burning,” he said. “I had to see it with my own eyes.”
“I can’t believe Jesus was struck,” said his brother, who noted the giant Hustler Hollywood sign for the adult store across the street was untouched. “It’s the last thing I expected to happen.”
This is a real tragedy for lovers of roadside landmarks and strange things around the country. The church members say the statue will be replaced. Value is around $300,000.
All of the photos on my blog are original, most of them taken by me or always in my presence, but this time I had to make an exception and swiped these off the Internet.

Giant Chest of Drawers
This is a building sized chest of drawers in downtown High Point NC. The socks hanging out of the drawer are a nice touch. This appears to be a small office building.

Oyotunji African Village
This is the Oyotunji African Village near Beaufort SC. Started in the 1970s the village is now the home of about 10 families. The village claims to be "an independent government" and not a part of the United States. Their religion and culture are called Yoruba.
I have lots more photos of the village and will eventually post them. The statues, signs, paint colors, and walls on the 26 acre compound are great. A guide will show you around for a small donation. It is worth the trip if you are in the area.
Touchdown Jesus
This huge statue of Jesus is located off interstate 75 between Cincinatti and Dayton in the town of Monroe Ohio. He was built by the Solid Rock Church in 2004, is 62 feet tall, made out of wood, metal, fiberglass and foam. He took over 60 gallons of paint. The big statue has been nicknamed Touchdown Jesus because of his raised hands. He looks especially good on this overcast day. If you go by here, stop and pull into the church and take a look at this big guy. He is quite awe inspiring.

Flea Market Church
His House is a ministry that works with recovering alcoholic men. Each Sunday morning Reverend Weaver and His House founder Reverend Ramsey hold a 30 minute service at #1 Flea Market in Lexington County, SC. The service always has a short "report or testimony" section followed by words and a bible reading, usually by Rev. Weaver. Nelson Daily and Glenn Barkoot play guitars and sing a couple gospel songs. Most of the people who attend are vendors who open the booths right after the service.
